New Bern is a small city in eastern North Carolina, located at the confluence of the Trent and Neuse Rivers, and is the county seat of Craven County.
Founded in 1710 by Swiss and German immigrants, New Bern is one of the oldest towns in North Carolina and served as the capital of the colony from 1746 until 1792. Today, it is known for its historic downtown district, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features more than 150 buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The city's historic sites include Tryon Palace, the former residence of North Carolina's colonial governor, which has been restored and is now a state historic site and museum. The New Bern Academy Museum, the Attmore-Oliver House, and the Masonic Theatre are also popular tourist destinations.
In addition to its historic attractions, New Bern is known for its outdoor recreational opportunities, such as boating and fishing on the Trent and Neuse Rivers, hiking and camping in the Croatan National Forest, and golfing at local courses.
The city also has a thriving arts and culture scene, with a variety of galleries, theaters, and music venues showcasing local and national talent. The North Carolina Symphony performs regularly at the New Bern Performing Arts Center, and the city hosts several annual festivals and events, including the Mumfest, a popular fall festival that draws tens of thousands of visitors to the area.
